Michael Ciravolo is no stranger to the rock music community. The renowned guitarist is president of Schecter Guitar Research, played in Human Drama for 30 years, with Gene Loves Jezebel since 98, and fronts Beauty in Chaos, his own project which has earned critical acclaim since the 2018 debut Finding Beauty in Chaos. His outstanding blend of goth rock with post punk ideals and touches of new wave has made The Storm Before The Calm one of this year’s most anticipated albums. By allowing his collaborators to first hear what he’s created musically, let them feel the lyrics that the music brought out in them, giving each song a unique perspective. “The Delicate Balance of All Things” (ft. Wayne Hussey of The Mission) and “A Kind of Cruelty” (ft. Curse Mackey of Pigface, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Evil Mothers), both shared ahead of the album’s release, gave great insight as to what we could expect as each song smashed the sum of all the parts and pieces into a clean, modern flared rhythm while keeping a foot firmly planted in the past. An expected moodiness shines the moment you hit play and are trudged through a melody that sets the perfect pace around the vocals of Ashton Nyte (The Awakening) on opening track “The Outside.” But as you push forward into the album, you’ll find synth interacting with the intricate guitar work inside the otherwise gothic industrial feel of songs like the theatrical bent “Almost Pure.” However, it’s Kat Leon’s (Holy Wars) vocals on “Stranger” that raise the album to another level. She allows her voice to capture you until you get lost in it as she showcases her incredible range while wrapping it around emotionally charged lyrics that sing of not feeling like yourself in the wake of life-altering moments (in this case, the loss of her parents). Michael Ciravolo could’ve allowed his guitar work to be the bold centerpiece, but instead, allows it to merely play great accompaniment to incredible vocals and lyrics that capture the essence of each song. There’s a clear throwback vibe to the era when gothic infused bands and industrial giants (such as Ministry) were finding their way to mainstream radio, but the know-how of each participant as to how to breathe modern-kissed life into their individual effort gives each track an ultra-fresh take on an old, proven idea.
